Dear Deputy Secretary Sullivan:

We, the bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Dioceses in the United States, are writing to precise our grave concern over yesterday’s assault by the Kosovo Police on Marko Djuric, Director of the Serbian Government Office for Kosovo and Metohija, in addition to journalists and unarmed residents. Our concern is especially heightened noting that this brutality appears to be an integral half of an orchestrated marketing campaign towards Kosovo’s Serbian inhabitants, coming in the wake of the assassination of Oliver Ivanovic.

In a provocative present of pressure, the police pressure stormed a gathering between residents and authorities officers fully-armed and with shock bombs. Over 34 individuals have been severely injured requiring hospitalization, whereas Marko Djuric was unlawfully arrested, overwhelmed, and paraded by way of Pristina earlier than jeering crowds.

Yesterday’s occasions show as soon as once more that the Kosovo Albanian authorities are unwilling to guarantee the minimal of fundamental civic and human rights, together with the proper to peacefully assemble, to the Serbian inhabitants residing in its personal land. Moreover, these actions present a wanton disregard for the obligations Pristina has itself undertaken to implement important human and civil rights requirements as half of its Stabilization and Association Agreement with the EU, in addition to contravening the letter and spirit of the Brussels dialogue.

We name on you, Mr. Deputy Secretary, to indicate that the United States stays dedicated to defending the most basic rights and fundamental human dignity of the Kosovo Serbian inhabitants by condemning yesterday’s police brutality in Kosovska Mitrovica, and by making clear to the authorities in Pristina that the United States won’t ever condone beatings of peaceable residents, journalists, and public officers.

Respectfully yours,

Rt. Rev. Bishop Maxim
Rt. Rev. Bishop Longin
Rt. Rev. Bishop Irinej
