ENGAGED: The Call to Be Disciples

Go, subsequently and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them within the identify of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, educating them to look at all that I’ve commanded you.  Matthew 28:19-20

Jesus mentioned, “Therefore I inform you, don’t be troubled about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your physique, what you shall placed on.  Is not life greater than meals, and the physique greater than clothes?  Look on the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor collect into barns, and but your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not of extra worth than they?  Matthew 6: 25-26

Good morning Prayer Team!

Today marks the start of Great Lent, a day the church calls “Clean Monday” or “Kathara Deftera.”  While we don’t placed on ashes to recollect the stain of our sins, we should always nonetheless spend time reflecting on the state of our hearts, souls and lives, and try to “clean” that which is soiled in our ideas, our emotions and in our deeds.

I’ve determined to take a sooner or later departure from the “Engaged: The Call to Be Disciples” sequence to speak about worth.  Yesterday after church, I used to be requested my ideas concerning the latest faculty mass capturing in Parkland, Florida.  I used to be requested “Why do I think these things keep happening?”  My reply is easy—We, as a society, have misplaced our sense of worth for each other.  If I’m mendacity to you, then I don’t worth you.  If I’m stealing from you, I don’t worth you.  If I’m dishonest in class or work or anyplace to be able to get forward of you, I don’t worth you.  If I’m all about me, I don’t worth you.  Because we, as a society, are hooked on dishonesty, theft, dishonest and ourselves, we don’t worth each other.  Is it any shock then, that it has develop into common-place for us to take out weapons (or knives, or automobiles, or bombs) and homicide others?  We as a society have forgotten how one can worth different individuals.  Yes, there are people who find themselves mentally unstable, and sure, there are people who find themselves lonely—they nonetheless have worth.  It’s as much as us, individually and collectively, to place worth on every particular person.

Think for a minute concerning the phrases all of us say—are they extra complimentary or vital?  Think for a minute concerning the phrases you say to your partner, your kids, your co-workers, your mates—are they extra optimistic or detrimental?  Are they crammed with extra reward or extra criticism?  Are we encouragers or discouragers?  Are we individuals who search to incorporate others or exclude them?  Are we people who find themselves approachable or unapproachable?  Peace-makers or peace-takers?

As we start the season of Great and Holy Lent, allow us to meditate on the phrase “value.”  We every have infinite worth within the eyes of God.  We have to see our personal worth.  We have to see the worth in others.  When we collectively take the perspective of “you matter” relating to others, then, I imagine, we are able to flip the tide.

The journey of Great Lent calls on us to look inwardly.  Today’s prayer is the Lenten Prayer of St. Ephraim.  It reminds us that in this season, we’re imagined to deal with ridding ourselves of laziness, meddling, lust for energy and idle speak (gossip).  Rather we’re imagined to deal with prudence, humility, persistence and love.  We are to like our brother reasonably than decide him, specializing in our personal faults reasonably than his.

The two best commandments are to like God and to like our neighbor. We dwell in a society the place we marginalize God and marginalize our neighbor.  It’s time to get again to fundamentals.  I can’t change society, and neither are you able to.  But we are able to every change our nook of it.  We can every love God.  We can every love the neighbor that’s in our own residence, or subsequent to our house, or within the subsequent workplace, or on the money register on the retailer.

So let’s begin Lent off by getting again to the fundamentals.  Love God, and know that He loves you and values you.  Love your neighbor.  Find worth in him.

Finally, the Prayer Team started on Clean Monday of 2015, so at the moment marks three years since this endeavor started.  I’m grateful to the Lord for the inspiration He offers and to you, in your prayers and encouragement.  By God’s grace, I hope to jot down messages of hope and inspiration for years to come back.

O Lord and Master of my life, don’t allow the spirit of laziness and meddling, the lust for energy and idle speak to come back into me.

Instead grant me, Your servant, the spirit of prudence, humility, persistence and love.

Yes, Lord and King, give me the facility to see my very own faults and to not decide my brother.

For You are blessed unto the ages of ages.  Amen.  (Prayer of St. Ephraim, Trans. by Holy Cross Seminary Press)

Kali Sarakosti!  Have a blessed Lent!
