ENGAGED: The Call to Be Disciples
Go, due to this fact and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the identify of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, instructing them to observe all that I’ve commanded you. Matthew 28:19-20
The Invitation is For EVERYONE
The Lord takes pleasure in His folks. Psalm 149:four
In our trendy world, there are two interpretations for the way invites are supplied. If solely a choose few are invited to one thing, accusations of favoritism and elitism observe. If everyone seems to be invited to one thing, then there are platitudes about dumbing down or political correctness, “everyone’s a winner” and stress to embody everybody.
The invitation from the Lord for us to be His Disciples, His associates, this name is prolonged to everybody. And in contrast to the two varieties of invites described above, the Lord shouldn’t be unique or elitist in limiting the invitation, neither is He political or pressured in providing it to everybody.
The name to be Disciples is for EVERYONE, even when we’ve screwed issues up. If you might be dwelling, there isn’t a sin which you’ll commit from which you can not repent. If you might be alive, there may be hope for you.
Let’s use an excessive instance of repentance—a mass assassin. Most folks don’t need to suppose there may be hope of salvation for individuals who have dedicated heinous crimes. I personally imagine that there must be no hope for freedom for individuals who have dedicated heinous crimes. I do imagine there are crimes which advantage incarceration for all times with no chance of getting out. However, there isn’t a crime for which one can’t repent, although they could have to dwell out their name to be a disciple inside a jail cell. Ideally, as Christians, we’re to pray for the salvation of all. Not essentially freedom for all, however salvation for all.
Let’s have a look at a much less excessive instance. Most of us, fortunately, is not going to select to commit heinous crimes. However, nobody is ideal. We all have sins, giant and small, from which we’d like to repent. The excellent news is that we’re known as to be Disciples, regardless of our imperfections. Christ known as Peter, figuring out that Peter would deny Him thrice. Christ known as Thomas, figuring out that Thomas would doubt Him. Christ calls every of us, figuring out that we are going to every sin. However, He KNOWS that every of us is succesful of repentance.
There is a caveat to God’s name and that’s that this name is voluntarily answered. No one is coerced to reply the name to be a Disciple. Christ doesn’t power us to observe. Christ invitations. It is up to every of us to settle for the invitation. Christ tells us that there’s a judgment coming over every human life, and answering the name to be a Disciple will consider to our everlasting judgment.
In Matthew 22:1-14, Jesus tells the parable of a marriage banquet. Many have been invited. When the time got here for the marriage feast, the king who was providing the banquet, despatched his servants to collect the company. Many company made excuses not to come. In truth some of the company even killed the servants who went out to greet them and invite them. The king was indignant and despatched his servants to carry anybody they may discover into the feast. One man was there who had no marriage ceremony garment. The king ordered him thrown out. The parable concludes with the phrase “Many are known as, however few are chosen.” (Matthew 22:14) It wouldn’t be a stretch to interpret this verse as “many are called, but few choose to accept the invitation.”
The King is Christ. The servants are the authentic Disciples (in addition to the “disciples” who’ve come after them all through the centuries). Many of the invited company have refused the invitation, and have even killed the messengers, the disciples. Being a Disciple means accepting the invitation to attend, and additionally turning into one of those that share the message, who lengthen the invitation to others. Being a disciple isn’t all the time straightforward, as we see from the servants who have been “treated shamefully and killed.” (14:6) The reward is being at the banquet with the King, being with Christ in the Kingdom. The invitation to “come” is for everybody.
Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a brand new music, His reward in the meeting of the trustworthy! Let Israel be glad in his Maker, let the sons of Zion rejoice of their King! Let them reward His identify with dancing, making melody to Him with timbrel and lyre! For the Lord takes pleasure in His folks; He adorns the humble with victory. Let the trustworthy exult in glory; allow them to sing for pleasure on their couches. Let the excessive praises of God be of their throats and two-edged swords of their arms, to wreak vengeance on the nations and chastisement on the peoples, to bind their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron, to execute on them the judgment written! This is glory for all His trustworthy ones. Praise the Lord! Psalm 149
Christ is inviting YOU to His “banquet”—each for as we speak and for eternity! Will you be one of the ones who “choose” to settle for?
