  1. As far as I can tell, Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians (my received faith as a child) are doing okay right now. The Lutherans are in real trouble, however. In the U.S., for example, they shot themselves in the foot when the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) endorsed gay pastors in 2009, gay marriage in 2011, and elected their first gay bishop in 2013. To appreciate the train-wreck which is the ELCA, check out this article. The Incredible, Shrinking ELCA I do not see how anyone can look at the way Williams College hires chaplains without noticing that it is endorsing and furthering the destruction of the Church in the U.S. Frankly, it would be better to have no chaplain at all than one who is tearing down the faith. When I taught at Williams in the 1980s we had a female chaplain. I remember her face, but not her name. As I recall, the conservative students poked fun at her and I don”t think any of us took her views seriously at all.
